Trick to sketching more is to have your supplies ready to grab and go or in the car all the time. Secret nobody tells you is to buy double supplies if you need to. love that pencil? get two. One for everyday use and one in your kit. It is worth the doubles to have a drawing supplies all together instead of looking for this pen, pencil , brush as you get ready to go somewhere. it was the best thing I ever did, having duplicates of my favorites pens and p brushes. Even a small watercolor set. Then i knew my kit was complete and cold spend more time sketching and recording! What I wanted to really be doing…not trying to remember when I last had that brush. What are your favorite supplies and tips to spend more time drawing? C Love to hae a new excuse to go get a new tool! Share in the comments below. hope you found this helpful too! happy travels and sketching!
Do what you can with the moments you have….you too could be pleasantly surprised! 💙 Sketchbook page all ready with some snippets of paper.I began sketching in the car. On the way out of studio a little early to bus I wanted to squeeze in a bit if sketching. I grab a daffodil. Something other than people while I’m waiting somewhere. Which seems to be my recent theme lately to sketches. In my car now,I found I left my pencil case behind. I routed around in my console finding a stray brush, used a capful of water and my watercolors…I pushed on determined to create! It’s not a typical ink drawing I would of done if I had my case…but I’m pleased even more! I’m pleased even more!
HEREI never would of imagined I would be one of THOSE. My early years of catholic school are still are with me in that I would never dream of writing in a book let alone a BIBLE! But her I am doing it, LOVING IT! Growing closer to God.
I was slow to start. First Sunday Sketching and note taking of the sermon during service. That now I have grown very comfortable doing it. The church I attend already encouraged note taking. For me as an artist I take notes with images. I couldn’t’ help myself. But at first with no intention.
Jump to the last few years…I now have a designated sermon sketchbook. (the blue one above) I have intentions with the little doodles and drawings. They relate back to the sermon or activities around me at the time. Little by little I have “upped” the materials I use in church. Even using my watercolors in church but more. Though mostly adding color after when I return home or in the evening. It gives me a time to reflect on what I heard, what I wrote. Fill in the notes before I forget and just tidy it up.
To now I am applying my drawings and notes to my Bible. My classroom roommate at school is a Pastor. I teach skills for living and he teaches Living the Bible. Different class times of coarse …his Bible is full of notes, underlines, highlights. Pages just warn and some falling out. But the character of this Bible I JUST LOVE! When I asked about it he told me how it has helped him to mark subjects and specifics places of topics. Which then in turn helps him to refer back when needed. Aided in his ability to learn scripture and specific topics in books. So I finally took the leap and yes I now draw and write in my Bible! I am just so excited to see where God is going to take me with using my love of art and color into His word.
Join me for my next post where I will share with you what I have discovered about particular Bibles that work well for creating in.

You walk into your home or office, look around, what do you see? I would be confident in saying you have images, even art work, that bring you some sort of joy and happiness. Imagine our world with out art? Blank, plain walls, rooms, even our phones where we scroll hundreds of images a day… until I really pictured this scenario, I didn’t realize how our world is beautified by art. The statements it can make. It makes it truly a better place.
So how about giving a gift of art this season. Yes, its personal. That’s why it is perfect as a gift. You have to put some thought into the receiver but when you give it…the gift receiver of this unique beautiful and well thought out gift will know how much you care about them.
I did some research and gathered tips that will help you find that perfect piece.
No particular order…
Think about the colors and décor they like. You don’t want to get classic style art for someone who has a modern taste. If you have never been to their home or office, take note of the colors and clothing style. What do they drink their coffee out of?( I know I have a few favorite mugs that tell about me.) All usually a good indication of their taste.
Keeping in mind the above, pick artwork that nobody else has. Local artists and galleries are a superb source for original art and unique prints. We all know some of the classics out there…and your art gift recipient will be impressed you took the time to think this gift through. Finding that special artwork that speaks to them.
Find a subject matter that the are into. Start with making a list of things the person you are giving the art to likes such as their hobbies and life style. With this start you will be well on your way with a direction.
Still unsure…selecting small art can be a sure way they will be able to fit it in. Or several small works of art to create a grouping or accompany it with and easel, a candle perhaps that will look good to display together in any variety of locations.
And finally, include a note with your gift. You could explain about the art, what prompted you to select the piece for them. Art after alt is even better when you include the story behind it.
I hope this will spur you on to give art this season when looking for something special for a favorite friend or that colleague.
